Lucky For Santorum That He’s Not A Homeless Black Woman…
…or he’d be in big trouble, right now.
Tell me if you see a difference between these two situations (it might not be terribly obvious if you’re a politician):
1) Rick Santorum is a white, former senator. When his family and he moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia he enrolled his kids in an online charter school— and charged their former Pennsylvania school district for the tuition.
The school district says that the Santorums bilked them out of $100,000 in this way.
When they realized that the Santorums actually lived in Virginia and were not entitled to be reimbursed by them— the school district took serious action.
More on this in a minute.
2) Tonya McDowell is a homeless black woman who lives in Connecticut. Since she was homeless she used her babysitter’s address to register her child for school.
The school district says that Ms. McDowell stole $15,686 in educational services from them in this way.
Oh, by the way— they said that if Ms. McDowell had been living in the homeless shelter instead of on the street then her daughter could have legally attended that school.
So the school district took serious action.
Let’s see how each case turned out:
The Santorums were almost forced to pay back the $100,000. Oh no! And they agreed not to bilk the Pennsylvania school district out of any more money.
Scouts honor.
Oh— and he gets to run for president of the United States of America.
Tonya McDowell, on the other hand, will NOT be running for president, this year, because she is pleading guilty to grand larceny, today, and will probably go to jail.
It’s hard to campaign from a jail cell.
Sorry, Tonya! If only you were a rich white guy things might have turned out very differently for you.

I’m sure a black, female politician would have gotten away with it, just like Santorum, if she had the same amount of money.

God, I hate that word. There is so much baggage associated with it and until recently I didn't even really apply it to myself. I've always just been "a woman." It is accurate, though, so I guess there is no avoiding it.
